The Ruth Spearing Cancer Research Trust

The Ruth Spearing Cancer Research Trust was established in 2008 through a generous donation from Barry Mather, in his words “only through research will we find the cure.” Barry lost his 3-year battle against chronic lymphocytic leukaemia.

The trust aims to support small to medium sized projects across the South Island especially in the field of haematology, and with specific emphasis on being able to turn around requests quickly. It works in partnership with the Canterbury Medical Research Foundation. It has as its patron Nicky Hobbs, the wife of the late Jock Hobbs.

Charitable Trusts also support our Summer Student programme, helping place students with our host universities, the University of Otago, Christchurch and the University of Canterbury.

Our thanks also to these trusts which help us to fund important projects on a regular basis:

The S J Charitable Trust
The W H Travis Charitable Trust
The Neil and Pearl Hamilton Charitable Trust
