Our guest speaker this year was mental health research expert Professor Richard Porter, Director of the Mental Health Clinical Research Unit at the University of Otago, Christchurch. The “Black Dog” of Depression – what causes it and what can we do about it?
Nearly 1 in 5 of us will experience depression in any given year, often sparked by a stressful event or time in life. It can be difficult to treat, causing long term memory problems.
This interactive lecture will explain what happens in the human brain to cause depression – revealing the cutting-edge, practical treatments being trialled at the University of Otago, Christchurch, to treat it.
Professor Richard Porter’s main research interests are in the treatment of mood disorders. He has a particular interest in clinical trials in mood disorders, service delivery and psychological treatments. He has conducted multiple studies into the neurobiology of mood disorders and particularly the neurobiology of cognitive impairment and is now conducting studies of cognitive remediation in mood disorders. He is a consultant psychiatrist specialising in psychiatric care of adults with intellectual disability and also sees patients with treatment resistant mood disorders for second opinions regarding treatment.
